The issue of online privacy continues to garner more and more attention on Capitol Hill. Recently four US Senators sent a letter to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg over concerns regarding Facebook’s recent changes to its privacy policy and allowing 3rd party sites to uses personal data.
A Politico report quotes from the letter citing the Senator’s concerns:
While Facebook provides a valuable service to users by keeping them connected with friends and family and reconnecting them with long-lost friends and colleagues, the expansion of Facebook – both in the number of users and applications – raises new concerns for users who want to maintain control over their information.
Interestingly this letter comes just days after Google was exposed in Germany for recording WLAN and MAC addresses while its street view cameras were driving through the streets. This revelation immediately drew criticism in Germany, but so far US lawmakers have been silent on the subject.
Clearly privacy is a growing concern on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers, consumers and the technology industry must work together to find common a sense solution that protects privacy without stifling innovation.
