China, other Countries Cited for Lack of Intellectual Property Protections

The annual ‘Section 301′ report from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative noted that China continues to be an area of concern when it comes to protecting intellectual property.

National Journal’s story on the report says: The report “identifies a wide range of serious concerns, ranging from troubling ‘indigenous innovation’ policies that may unfairly disadvantage U.S. rights holders in China, to the continuing challenges of Internet piracy in countries such as Canada and Spain, to the ongoing systemic IPR enforcement challenges in many countries around the world,” according to the report.

Protecting IP is key to making sure innovation continues to thrive. A recent report showed that the technology sector lost less jobs than the overall US economy in 2009, with the software sector actually gaining jobs. In order to see continued growth in the technology sector, we must have adequate protections of IP.

Online Privacy Concerns on Capitol Hill

The issue of online privacy continues to garner more and more attention on Capitol Hill. Recently four US Senators sent a letter to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg over concerns regarding Facebook’s recent changes to its privacy policy and allowing 3rd party sites to uses personal data.

A Politico report quotes from the letter citing the Senator’s concerns:

While Facebook provides a valuable service to users by keeping them connected with friends and family and reconnecting them with long-lost friends and colleagues, the expansion of Facebook – both in the number of users and applications – raises new concerns for users who want to maintain control over their information.

Interestingly this letter comes just days after Google was exposed in Germany for recording WLAN and MAC addresses while its street view cameras were driving through the streets. This revelation immediately drew criticism in Germany, but so far US lawmakers have been silent on the subject.

Clearly privacy is a growing concern on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers, consumers and the technology industry must work together to find common a sense solution that protects privacy without stifling innovation.
